Postcards from Greece

Leadership isn鈥檛 taught only in classrooms. Sometimes, it鈥檚 learned one shared experience at a time.
Leadership feels different in the ancient birthplace of democracy. Seven students spent two weeks this summer learning about leadership on a very personal level in Greece 鈥 a country slightly smaller than Alabama and alive with millennia of art, philosophy and civilization.
Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Andi Kent and Dr. Rick Carter, 麻豆直播鈥檚 associate vice president for global engagement, led the Study Abroad program. From a caf茅-side Socratic discussion in Athens to a chance meeting in Delphi that connected 麻豆直播鈥檚 campus to an ancient oracle, every stop offered lessons in courage, curiosity and connection.
In Kastoria, a family dinner of roasted lamb, music and laughter showed that leadership can also mean hospitality.
The students hiked Mount Pelion, stood at Thermopylae and reflected beside the Ionian Sea, experiences that would reshape how they see themselves and their place in the world.
Athens
Emma Harrod: 鈥淚t was my first time traveling out of the country and my first experience as a student at 麻豆直播. I sat on the plane thinking, we鈥檙e about to walk into a new environment. I don鈥檛 even know the students I鈥檓 going with 鈥 but we鈥檙e in this together. 鈥淚鈥檝e seen the replica of the Parthenon in Nashville, but to stand in front of the real thing 鈥 to see how Greek history shaped leadership and government 鈥 was surreal.鈥
Delphi
Dr. Rick Carter: 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 believe it at first 鈥 a man stopped us, recognized the Jaguar logo, and said his father helped dedicate the replica of the Tholos that stands on our campus. 鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 planned; it wasn鈥檛 scripted. It just happened. A small-world moment
Thermopylae
Mason Mullaney: 鈥淲e stopped at the Hot Gates, where the Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 B.C. 鈥 King Leonidas and 300 Spartans against hundreds of thousands of Persians. Our guide tied it to leadership and bravery in everyday life.鈥
Volos (Mount Pelon)
Nolan Crawford: 鈥淚n Volos, at the University of Thessaly, we met Greek students and talked about how their college life is so different, but also how much we had in common. 鈥淚t reminded me not to take all of the resources that we enjoy at 麻豆直播 for granted. I was never more proud to be a Jag. 鈥淭he 5-mile climb up Mount Pelion was a leadership lesson disguised as a hike.鈥
Meteora
Meteora looks Otherwordly, with monasteries balanced on top of high rock pillars. Centuries ago, monks used ropes and pulleys to bring up supplies. These monasteries became strongholds of Greek culture and language during times of occupation.
Kastoria
Ansley Simmons: 鈥淜astoria was special. It鈥檚 not a normal tourist area, so we really saw everyday Greek life. That night at our guide鈥檚 parents鈥 house, we had dinner, dancing, Greek singing. It was so real and so authentic. That鈥檚 when it hit me: This was once in a lifetime.鈥 Dr. Andi Kent: 鈥淭heir family had built a tiny church on their property as an act of prayer. We all went inside and lit candles. It was so moving, and it was beautiful to see.鈥
Vergina
Mary Elizabeth Kent: 鈥淲e saw the tombs of Phillip II, Alexander the Great and his son. Witnessing the real artifacts 鈥 the untouched crowns, armor and carved stones 鈥 gave me a profound respect for legacy and leadership. These men shaped nations, and centuries later, their presence still resonates.鈥
Lefkada (Island)
Kali Johnston: 鈥淭hat was our reward day. The beaches were incredible 鈥 the water was freezing, and the waves kept knocking us down, but it was so much fun. We sat by the sea. The fish were nibbling at our blisters. We talked about what we鈥檇 learned and how lucky we are to have this community."
Returning Home
Alex Downes: 鈥淲e ended our trip where we began. After meeting with two representatives from the U.S. Embassy, we got coffee, cherishing the last freddo cappuccinos. It was a bittersweet night. None of us wanted to leave the next morning. What an amazing two weeks!鈥
鈥淲e became like a family. I think I learned more from the students than they did from me, both from being in Greece and from seeing how they approached every challenge with curiosity and joy.鈥 鈥 Dr. Andi Kent
