The awards mark an important milestone for the University as the Social Justice Initiative launches this year. The program will oversee and fund two projects each year. She, along with co-principal investigator, Dr. Kern Jackson, will receive $10,000 of seed money for their project focusing on the Mobile community entitled, 鈥淓thnography of Seeing: Transformative Photography for Social Justice in Africatown, U.S.A.鈥 In addition to interviewing residents of the Africatown community, the team will also gather and incorporate information from the last slave ship to enter Mobile Bay, the Clotilda, into their research. Dadzie and Kern will work to better understand and then communicate the social justice struggles imposed by race, poverty, and lack of access to social services experienced by individuals in the Africatown community in hopes of positively impacting future generations.
