Honors and Friends Travel to Selma and Montgomery

On March 3 and 4, 2018, the Honors College along with friends from the Student Government, the Collegiate One Hundred, and Swansea University traveled to Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, where we experienced past and present moments in the history of civil rights and the black freedom struggle.
In Montgomery we walked its markers of the slave trade, visited Martin Luther King鈥檚 Dexter Avenue Church, and took in the beautiful granite and water Civil Rights Memorial designed by Maya Lin. We also saw the Equal Justice Institute and visited the site of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice鈥攖he lynching memorial that opened in April. Jesse Jackson was also in Montgomery, and we were fortunate enough to run into him鈥攁nd to talk and take photos鈥攊n front of King鈥檚 Dexter Avenue Church.
That evening we talked through our day over dinner, s鈥檓ores, and a campfire at YCMA Camp Chandler, and then left early the next morning for the Annual Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee on Sunday, March 4. We started our visit to Selma by listening to Georgia Representative John Lewis recount his beating on the Edmund Pettus Bridge on 鈥淏loody Sunday,鈥� March 7, 1965, then joined the commemorative march before returning to Mobile.
