Heading into the first year of residency may be challenging for recent medical school graduates. To help students excel, Nicolette Holliday, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist at USA Health, provides a boot camp as an introduction to the next phase of their medical education.
Holliday, also an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of 麻豆直播 Alabama College of Medicine, created the boot camp several years ago as a way for rising interns to better understand what to expect before their residency training and to recap the last few years of medical school.
鈥淚鈥檝e been there; I know what it鈥檚 like to walk into the first year of residency and feel nervous about what鈥檚 next,鈥 Holliday said. 鈥淚 wanted them to know we are here to help them, and we want them to succeed.鈥
Holliday, along with OB-GYN Clerkship Coordinator Heather Glass, offers students the opportunity to attend the workshop annually. During the class, students sharpen their skills and discuss common clinical concerns, procedures and medications. They use mannequins to practice simulation deliveries and ways to communicate with patients.
鈥淚t鈥檚 important that our students are prepared to hit the ground running in their programs,鈥 Glass said. 鈥淭o be able to give this course can be beneficial for our students to make a strong first impression.鈥
For resident physicians Alex Jager, M.D., and Angela Mosley-Johnson, M.D., they were excited to learn more during the course and are grateful for the experience.
鈥淎t the camp, we were provided essential information that will be extremely helpful during our intern year,鈥 Jager said. 鈥淚 will use the tools learned at this class moving forward.鈥
鈥淚t feels great to know people like Dr. Holliday and Heather are invested in our education and helping us advance to the next level of our careers,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淚鈥檓 even more excited about pursuing my residency at USA Health.鈥
